The Revenant is a 2015 American three-hour, eighteen-minute survival and revenge drama film directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu from a screenplay by Iñárritu, Mark L. In 1823, Hugh Glass guides Andrew Henry’s trappers through unorganized territory. While he and his half-Pawnee son, Hawk, are hunting, the company’s camp is attacked by an Arikara war party. Glass recommends that the survivors travel light to flee faster and lays down his weapons as a gesture of peace. The leader of the attackers, Chief Awatohtine or "Two Trees", orders that Glass be executed with only an object for shelter against the cold.
Afterwards, a Pawnee scout named "Hairy Scary" finds the only survivor of the massacre: a child named Hawk who has been spared because he can speak their language. The scout nurses him back to health so he can translate their notes and tell his father of the attack. Hairy Scary’s wife, who has lost her husband and son, begs him to turn back. Glass, meanwhile, survives his wounds but is pinned in a bear trap by a smaller bear and left for dead by the other trappers.
At their new camp on the western shore of the Missouri River in 1824, Hugh’s hunting partner Jim Bridger is aware of Hugh’s past and adopts him into their group (which calls themselves "The Associates"). They find that they are being pursued by Comanches. After a battle, Glass is set upon by the same wolf pack that earlier killed Hugh’s son. Surviving the pain, he manages to kill both wolves, but is dragged away.
Hugh’s injury worsens to the point that he is unable to hunt or walk so Jim has him confined to carry their camp supplies while Jim goes off hunting. With no game, glass makes his way back to their abandoned camp where he finds his rifle has been taken except for two cartridges. He steals one of these cartridges believing it could be used to kill an elk for food if nothing else.
